Being that the garden is now firmly in the clutches of the South Florida Summer heat it seemed like a good time to check out other folk's plantings. There can be inspiration for your yard from the successes of your neighbors.
This morning I woke up to the power being off and no air conditioning . With the house slowly heating up it was the perfect time to break out my 13 foot Boston Whaler and go exploring.
I launched the boat at Haulover Park in Sunny Isles in Miami-Dade County. From here the choice is to run North in the intracoastal to Ft. Lauderdale or South to Miami.
The wind out of the South made my choice for me. By starting out into the wind South if any of the big thunder storms came up I could retreat back North to the ramp with a tailwind.

The first stop I made was at a small deserted spoil island in Biscayne bay. There are many small islands made from dredged up materials from the Biscayne Channel. They are used by boaters who picnic and swim for the day.
This particular little island is called Bay Island and is maintained by Miami-Dade County. It's accessable only by boat and has a small beach.
The County has planted native trees to the area with palms and mangroves.
I was able to park the boat right up to the beach and explore the island. The secret is to go on a weekday and avoid the weekend crowds. Today I had the island all to myself.
One idea that did cross my mind was the sea weed deposited along the shore and pushed up
onto the beach by the wind.
I know that they sell sea weed extract in garden shops that is supposed to be very good for your plants.
I am going to research this further on if it is possible to make your own. There is an unlimited supply here and it would be quite easy to fill up a couple of 5 gallon buckets when I take the boat out. It also might be quite good to add to my compost pile.
See the inspirations are starting already. ---sanddune---
