Some of the plantings made earlier in the summer are up and blooming now. This Mexican Sunflower is a favorite because it requires little care and produces its orange flowers in abundance throughout the hottest weather here. It attracts butterflies throughout the day and appears to be one of their favorites too. One plant will keep you resupplied with all the seeds you will need for the year.
Another favorite of mine is the Lantana bush. It attracts a different butterfly than the Mexican Sunflower to its multicolor blooms. This one I brought home from the woods up in North Florida over the Mothers Day weekend.
And one of the freecycle Orchids { see post FREE ORCHIDS from July 20 } that was given to me has started to bloom. It is a lighter shade of purple than my Hillbilly Orchid { see post HILLBILLY PURPLE ORCHID from April 27 2009 }.
This guy is also a hard caned Dendrobium like the Hillbilly. All I know is that it looks good and the best part is that it was recycled , rescued from being thrown away. All for free. ---sanddune---
